New airport investment tops 6B yuan

Local authorities said recently that current spending on the city’s new airport has topped six billion yuan in the year to date, with project annual spending to reach between 8.9 and 10 billion yuan. Construction on the facility's pile foundations are expected to begin in autumn.

The Xiang’an airport is expected to reduce congestion at the city’s single-runway Xiamen Gaoqi Airport, the country’s 11th-busiest passenger airport with more than 21 million passengers in 2015.

Construction began in 2014 and is slated for completion in 2018. The new airport will feature two runways and 550,000 square meters of terminal space when it is fully built-out in 2025. Expected annual capacity includes 45 million passengers and 750,000 tons of cargo annually. Future plans call for an additional pair of runways.
