年字的古体由禾与人组成，像人拉禾的样子，表示谷物成熟了，收割了。庄稼一次成熟到下次成熟的周期是一年。 The ancient version of the character "年nián" resembles a person harvesting crops. Since "年nián" means year and the harvesting cycles for most crops are a year, the Chinese named each cycle "年nián".
