Xiamen ranked first in a survey of garbage sorting inspection released recently by the China Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development for the second quarter of 2018.

Xiamen bested 46 major Chinese mainland cities in the survey. Shenzhen, Ningbo, Hangzhou and Shanghai rounded out the top five.

Xiamen's districts of Huli and Siming have rolled out garbage sorting programs for more than 1,400 residential communities and 1,100 schools as well as 120 municipal administration offices, 85 hotels, 66 produce markets and 12 state-run enterprises. Sorting programs also serve local public areas and military sites.

City officials also announced that Xiamen's compulsory household garbage sorting campaign will extend to all urban areas and two thirds of rural areas by the end of the year.
