City officials announced on June 5, World Environment Day, that the city's 2024 air quality comprehensive index was 2.34, a year-on-year improvement of 10.3 percent. Xiamen ranked third among 168 key cities nationwide, up four positions from the previous year. The city's percentage of excellent air quality rate reached 70.8 percent, with good air quality days notching an additional 28.7 percent.

 

Xiamen reached all-time highs for its comprehensive index, national ranking and percentage of excellent air quality days. Concentrations for five of six major pollutants decreased year-on-year, while one remained stable.

 

The annual average concentration of PM10 was 32 micrograms per cubic meter (down year-on-year by 13.5 percent) while PM2.5 hit 19 micrograms per cubic meter (down five percent). Xiamen's annual average concentrations of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) were the lowest in Fujian.
