Local government authorities announced recently the expectation that more than 17 percent of local residents will meet the official criteria for science literary.

Officials also announced plans for more than 20 science education bases spread through Xiamen.

The bases are to be promoted as centers that promote science education via multimedia, interactive activities geared to making the exploration of scientific knowledge visual and lively.

The plan calls for more than 20 bases in repurposed commercial and industrial facilities.
