Representatives of the city's Natural Resources and Planning Bureau joined with the Culture and Tourism Bureau to announce that Fujian officially declared Xiamen to be a Provincial Historical and Cultural City. 

City officials added that Xiamen will continue to improve the protection of local cultural sites, historical buildings and traditional areas.

Representatives added that preservation goals include the conservation of cultural traditions, a more robust historical and cultural protection system and the creation of mechanisms to protect Xiamen's historical heritage.
