Xiamen: A model for ecological conservation

2024-08-21 14:56

On August 12th, a state media delegation arrived in Xiamen in Southeast China's Fujian Province to unlock the code of the city's high-quality development and promote visionary philosophies adopted by Xiamen Special Economic Zone in advancing ecological conversation and green, low-carbon development.

Over the years, Xiamen has been at the forefront of driving a green, low-carbon transition in its regional economy. Xiamen Property Rights Transaction Center has pioneered the development of a "mountain-to-sea" ecological value trading system, a groundbreaking initiative that includes China's first trading platform for ocean and agricultural carbon sinks.

To date, this system has facilitated transactions totaling 280,000 metric tons in agricultural carbon sinks and more than 160,000 tons in marine carbon sinks, representing more than half of the total transactions of the nation's "blue carbon" market.

Reducing aviation fuel consumption has been a primary focus for Xiamen Airlines in its drive toward green transformation. Efforts include building a green fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft and engines, developing China's first home-made flight planning system "SkyHub" for precise fuel calculations, and issuing green operation recommendations to provide pilots with more well-conceived and intelligent fuel-saving guidance.

Over the past decade, Xiamen Airlines has saved nearly 1 million tons of fuel and reduced carbon emissions by over 3 million tons, equivalent to expanding afforestation areas by over 3 million mu (200,000 hectares).

Over a decade ago, Tong'an Bay in Xiamen was a disorderly mudflat area with overgrown grasses on the shore and unregulated aquaculture in the sea. In 2006, the city launched a comprehensive renovation project in its Huandong (east coastal) area, leading to an overall enhancement of its the marine ecological environment. This revitalization has resulted in the reappearance of some long-lost marine wildlife in the region.

Today, the Huandong Romantic Coast has seen significant improvements in tourism facilities, thriving with vibrant events such as the Xiamen Huandong Half Marathon, Xiamen International Beer Festival and various water sports, attracting numerous domestic and international tourists. Its surrounding areas are also witnessing the growth of industrial chains in high technology, emerging industries, and modern services. As Tong'an Bay is on track to become a core area of Xiamen Science City, its future looks exceptionally promising.
