The city of Wellington, New Zealand, established a sister-city relationship with Xiamen on June 23, 1987.

 

New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington contains the beautiful Wellington Harbor and is surrounded by rolling mountains. The city’s picturesque cityscapes and advantageous geographic location is a major tourist draw.  

 

Spanning a total area of 266 square kilometers, it is also the third most populous urban area in New Zealand, with an urban population of 200,000, accounting for about 20 percent of all population in the country.

The downtown area is about four kilometers across, and takes just 20 minutes to walk from one side to the other. Wellington airport is the busiest airport in the country; it is a 15 minute drive to downtown areas.

 

Wellington is New Zealand’s cultural city. It is home to the country’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, and performance groups such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

 

Since the establishment of sister-city relationships between Wellington and Xiamen, frequent exchanges and cooperation has been achieved in areas of the economy and trade, education, culture, healthcare, sports and horticulture.
