The Maersk Group held a launch ceremony for a new shipping route, the NV2 Maersk, a route that begins in Vietnam and includes a transfer at the Xiamen Port before providing ongoing service to the United States. Company officials said that the new service is the first time for Xiamen to serve as a link for international transit shipping from southeast Asia to the U.S.

Representatives of the Xiamen Port Holding Group at the launch ceremony note that the company's Songyu Wharf can dock the world's largest container ships, a significant factor in the decision by Maersk to conduct international transit operations at the facility.

“Since Maersk established business in Xiamen in 1991, Xiamen has become a major part of Maersk's global route network,” said Robbert Van Trooijen, the senior vice president of Maersk Group and head of the company's Asia Pacific operations. “Maersk now operates 14 routes every week at Xiamen Port and container throughput amounted to a record high of 1.2 million in 2018,” he added. “In the future, we will further strengthen the in-depth cooperation with Xiamen Port.
