The Xiamen tourism industry was badly hit by Typhoon Meranti, A temporary restriction on tourist numbers on Gulangyu during the 7-day period, meant only 15,000 visitors were permitted each day, a mere 23% of last year’s 65,000 daily maximum number of visitor. Added to this was the impact of Typhoon Megi, which resulted in Xiamen slipping down the tourism popularity index, though still ranking ninth on the list of top ten domestic travel destinations.

In recent years, Xiamen has built a group of new large scale tourist destinations which have played an effective role in dispersing tourists. Meanwhile, traditional attractions outside the island have also seen a large number of tourists. In addition, the Xiamen-Kinmen Travel Festival held by the Xiamen Tourism Bureau and the Kinmen Tourism Department, organised two new activities. The first is the "2016 Straits Adolescent Rite" and the other the "2016 Kinmen Half Marathon", which attracted a lot of students and running enthusiasts and brought a boost to Kinmen tourism. The official statistics show that the number of people travelling on Xiamen travel agency trips to Kinmen were up 1,880.

During the holidays, trains took 499,500 passengers to Xiamen, a decrease of 19.9%. 238,300 tourists (not including self-driving trips) made use of the highways, a drop of 6.95% while 197,800 passengers took planes between Oct. 1st-6th, an increase of 3.85%.
