MICE tourism industry boosts Xiamen economy
According to data released by the Xiamen Exhibition Bureau, in the first half of 2017, Xiamen hosted 93 exhibitions and 3,850 business meetings, which attracted over 850 thousand participants in total and produced 18.6 billions yuan in revenue. The data also showed that the MICE(meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industry contributed to one-third of the city’s total tourism revenues in 2016.
Mild climate and efficient lifestyle are the unique condition for Xiamen to develop the MICE industry. In recent years, the conference and exhibition tourism has boomed and becomes an important link between production and consumption. It also integrates industrial resources and promotes investment and trade.
At present, several key shows have developed into the city’s industrial cooperation platforms. For example, the China International Fair For Investment and Trade(CIFIT) has become an important platform for international business trading; the Xiamen Stone Fair, an internationally influential platform for stone trade; the Xiamen Ocean Week, an significant part of the “One Belt One Road” initiative.
Wang Qiongwen, director of the Xiamen Exhibition Bureau, said the upcoming BRICS Summit in Xiamen would be a vital opportunity for the transformation of the city’s MICE tourism industry.
