2018 Training Workshop on Integrated Coastal Management and Blue Economy Development for ASEAN Countries opens in Xiamen

The opening ceremony for the 2018 Training Workshop on Integrated Coastal Management and Blue Economy Development for ASEAN Countries was officially held in Xiamen, Fujian province On November 1.

 

Mr. Pan Shijian, former Vice Mayor of the Xiamen Municipal Government and Honorary Chairman of the PEMSEA Network of Local Governments for Sustainable Coastal Development (PNLG), and Mr. Lin Huaiyuan, chief engineer of Xiamen Bureau of Ocean and Fisheries, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

 

The training workshop attracted twenty-one officials from the relevant departments of marine fisheries from The Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

 

 

Sponsored by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China, the 10-day workshop, which runs from October 29 to November 7, will invite Chinese experts and scholars to give special lectures on integrated coastal management and blue economy development, and organize field visits to local integrated coastal management demonstration sites and marine economy leading enterprises in Xiamen.

 

Attendees to the training workshop will also be invited to supporting events during the 2018 World Ocean Week (WOW) in Xiamen, including the 2018 Xiamen International Ocean Forum, the 2018 South-South Cooperation Ocean Forum, and the Workshop on China-Southeast Asian Countries' Marine Protected Areas Management and Marine Conservation.

 

The organizers said that marine cooperation between China and ASEAN countries started in the 1990s and entered a new stage since 2013, opening a new chapter in the construction of the 21st century Maritime Silk Road. In November 2016, the China-ASEAN Marine Cooperation Center, which has been carefully planned for two years, settled in Xiamen. As a result of this platform, China and ASEAN countries can improve and speed up cooperation in their marine industries, marine trade and investment, marine science and technology, marine environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, marine culture, marine management and interconnection at sea.

 

Accordingly, the first edition of the training workshop was successfully held during the 2017 WOW, with the theme "Green Ecological Aquaculture".
