International Symposium on APEC Marine Sustainable Development Report concludes

The first International Symposium on APEC Marine Sustainable Development Reportwas held in Xiamen from November 2nd to 5th.

 
Under the leadership of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Oceanic Administration, the conference was hosted by the Oceanographic Development Strategy Research Institute of the State Oceanic Administration and organized by APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center and Xiamen University.

 

Zhang Haiwen, director of the Institute of Ocean Development Strategy of the State Oceanic Administration and Sun Shengzhi, deputy inspector of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Oceanic Administration made a speech at the forum.

 
Liu Yan, deputy director of the Strategic Planning and Economy Division of the State Oceanic Administration, shared his experience in compiling the APEC Marine Sustainability Report (Phase I).

 
Zhu Xuan from the Institute of Ocean Development Strategy of the State Oceanic Administration, Cheng Jun from the Nature Conservancy of the United States, Simina from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Zhao Zhongxiu from the University of International Business and Economics, and Liu Liang from the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center made reports at the meeting.

 
The meeting was chaired by Alison Marine from the Polar Affairs Office of the State Council of the United States and Qiu Wanfei from the Institute of Ocean Development Strategy of the State Oceanic Administration.

 
More than 30 experts and representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Conservation International, APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center and Xiamen University attended the meeting.

 

The APEC Marine Sustainable Development Report is a comprehensive and flagship report prepared by China under the authorization  of the APEC Marine and Fisheries Group, reflect the progress made in APEC's marine sustainable development. The report (Phase I) was published in 2014 and was welcomed and affirmed by the 4th APEC Ocean-Related MinisterialMeeting and the 22nd APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting.The preparation of the Report (Phase II) was launched in 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2019.

 

Leaders and experts at the summit spoke highly of the role of the report in promoting the marine  sustainable development in APEC and in enhancing  exchanges and cooperation among member economies on issues related to marine sustainable development. The meeting formed an "Outline for the Preparation of the Report (Phase II)".
