2017-11-07

On November 3rd, the World Ocean Week in Xiamen 2017 began with the theme of Global Ocean Governance for Blue Economy.

Prof. Hong Huasheng, the chief scientist from the Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI), Xiamen University, Dr. Ma Chaode, the programme manager of the Energy & Environment from UNDP China and Prof. Dai Minhan, the director of Xiamen University’s Faculty of Earth Science and Technology and State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science of Xiamen, hosted the forum. Twenty-three government officials, heads of international organizations and experts and scholars from different countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road made keynote speeches and participated in panel discussions.

The meeting upholds the concept of building a shared global governance, promoting international cooperation in the "Belt and Road", promoting global ocean governance and building a blue partnership.

Portugal’s Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, said the blue-scale economic relationship between Portugal and China is very important because both are maritime nations and have a strategic plan for maritime economic development.

When asked about the cooperation between Portugal and China, Ana said, scientific research cooperation comes first, and this includes projects on sustainable development, biotechnology and marine-related issues, and academic exchanges. Second is the corporation between the ports. Portugal is scheduled to invest 2.5 billion euro to build new ports. Third is cooperation on the international level. Portugal has some natural advantages as a result of the sea in the form of renewable energy sources such as wind energy, ocean energy and tidal energy. The new logistics system in Portugal can also be shared. In addition, Portugal has substantial experience in biotechnology, which can be used to develop new drugs, cosmetics and methods of physical therapy.

The forum produced fruitful results and has won approval from the relevant international organizations and participants.
