Hulishan Fortress, a state-level heritage site and a national AAAA scenic spot, was built from 1894 to 1896 during the reign of Qing emperor Guangxu on a 70,000-square-meter site. The 13,000-square-meter fortress was virtually impregnable, constructed with granite slabs, reinforced by applying a mixture of sand, clay, camphor tree juice, lime and glutinous rice. Consisting of a battle area, barracks, and a rear area, this European-style fortress contains blockhouses surrounded by outer walls, typical of Ming and Qing-dynasty cannon forts.

The behemoth German-made Krupp cannon at the fortress is reputed to be “the world’s oldest and largest 19th-century coastal defense gun on its original site”, earning a spot in the China Guinness World Records.
