Xiamen in East China's Fujian province has successfully retained its title of "national civilized city" for the sixth consecutive time, according to an appraisal list released by the Civilization Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Nov 10.

"National civilized city" refers to cities with a high degree of civilization and citizens who practice good manners and etiquette. It is the highest honor a city can receive in China and it reflects a city's level of economic growth, moral values and social harmony.

The selection procedures, which have been conducted every three years since 2005, include applications, provincial-level selection and recommendation, national-level evaluation, and overall assessments through reviews, questionnaires, online investigations and field trips.

Cities are scored on seven aspects, including governance, law enforcement, business environment, culture and education, living standards, environmental protection, and measures to promote civilization.

For years, the Xiamen government and CPC Xiamen committee have given top priority to the construction of a civilized city and embraced a people-centered development philosophy.

The city, which was named a "national ecological garden city" in April, also made the list of China's 10 best cities to live in for 2019 and 2020, which was released by China Central Television on July 6.
