The Lithuanian city of Kaunas became a sister city with Xiamen in Fujian province on March 11, 2001.

 

Kaunas is located in central Lithuania at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris. The city is approximately 100 kilometers away from the country’s capital, Vilnius. 

 

With a population of 415,000 and an area of 157 square kilometers, Kaunas ranks as the second largest city in Lithuania. It has a humid continental climate with an average annual temperature of approximately 6 °C (43 °F).

 

The city’s primary industries are in textile and machinery manufacturing, which account for 36.4 percent and 22.6 percent of the city’s GDP respectively.

 

Kaunas is known for its Free Trade Zone, which spans 1,054 hectares. It was entrusted to a Belgium company for administration in 1998 and achieved rapid development through cooperation with European companies.

The most characteristic building in Kaunas is its Municipal Building. It was founded in the 16th century and is 53 meters tall. The Gothic architecture featured there has earned it the name the “White Swan.”
