New high-speed railway to link Xiamen and Guangzhou directly

2016-09-01

A new high-speed rail route linking Xiamen and Guangzhou that will slash journey times between the two coastal cities to approximately three hours should be completed within four years, according to a Xiamen Daily report.

A high-speed line connecting Xiamen with Shenzhen, another mega-city in Guangdong province, is already in operation, so connecting Xiamen with Guangzhou will only require a relatively small extension to the existing line. The new branch will break off from the main line at Shanwei, and will run a further 230 kilometers to Guangzhou.

Once completed, 157 pairs of bullet trains will shuttle passengers from Xiamen to China's third-largest city.

Currently, the travel between Xiamen and Guangzhou takes 12 hours by common speed trains, and five to six hours by high-speed services which require a transfer at Shenzhen.

Improvements to the Xiamen-Shenzhen railway to increase speed and capacity are also planned to take place simultaneously, making it even easier to travel between Fujian and the Pearl River Delta.
