Exploring food in Bashi

2018-05-23

Adam: Hi Li Mei, guess what? Last weekend I visited Bashi, the Eighth Food Market. It was my first time and the food was amazing.

Li Mei: I'll bet you had a true feast. I'm glad you discovered the market. It's as famous to local residents as Zhongshan Road is to tourists. So what did you eat?

Adam: I tried Guo Bian Hu, the rice flour cake soup and I loved it so much that I ordered a second bowl.

Li Mei: Yep, I love it because it's unique to Fuzhou, where I grew up. Guo Bian Hu stalls are everywhere in the streets of Fuzhou. Next time you go, you should try Fuzhou's Guo Bian Hu.

Adam: Of course I will. I also tried a thin noodle pasta, is it from Fuzhou too? They're similar to Guo Bian Hu.

Li Mei: Nope, thin noodle pasta actually originated in Quanzhou. It's made of sweet potato starch and noodle thread. Usually eaten at breakfast, it can also be a late-night snack.

Adam: Got it. And I also saw sea worm jelly but I didn't try it because I wasn't sure what it is.

Li Mei: Sea worm jelly also originated in Quanzhou. Sand worms are the main ingredient so many people won't dare to try it.

Adam: Right, it's a little bit creepy, I couldn't do it.

Li Mei: And what else did you see?

Adam: I tried something that looked like a pancake with fillings but I can't remember the name.

Li Mei: I guess it was an oyster omelet, does that seem right?

Adam: Yep, I was too full to try it but it smelled delicious.

Li Mei: The omelets are filled with oysters and they're yummy.

Adam: Wow, then next time I'll have to order an oyster omelet.
