On ancient oracle bone inscriptions, this character looks like several pieces of jade strung together with a rope. On ancient Chinese bronze peices and Xiao Zhuan, it was written as three horizontal lines with a vertical line down the middle which was similar to “”; the three horizontal lines in “” are equidistance from each other, while “” is different. Now this character usually means “jade.”
