甲骨文的“玉”字像用一根绳子穿着几块玉石。金文和小篆作三横一竖,与“王”字相似;它们的区别是“玉”字三横等距,而“王”字不是。现在“玉”字一般表示“玉石”。
On ancient oracle bone inscriptions, this character looks like several pieces of jade strung together with a rope. On ancient Chinese bronze peices and Xiao Zhuan, it was written as three horizontal lines with a vertical line down the middle which was similar to “王”; the three horizontal lines in “玉” are equidistance from each other, while “王” is different. Now this character usually means “jade.”
