2019 Sunpadow International RC (off-road) Grand Prix Competition (SIGP) kicks off on Saturday in Xiamen, a coastal city in China's Fujian Province.

The competition consists of two programs, namely 1/8 Nitro and 1/8 Electric, with a prize of 150,000 yuan (about 22,334 US dollars). More than 200 contestants from Asia, Europe and North America joined the competition.

Joseph Quaqraine from Finland was confident of a podium finish although this was the first time for him to take part in this competition.

"I have been doing vehicle model for 10 years. I am not only a designer, but also a engineer and racer," Joseph said. " I believe I can move into the top 3."

Defending champion Ryan Lutz from the United States, on his third trip to Xiamen, gave his thumbs up to the facilities here.

"One of my friends from Hong Kong introduced me to join the match, and I cannot believe I can win the final last year. It is amazing. The facilities here are so nice that I want to join the match many more times," Lutz said.

Whereas for Hu Weiping, one of the top Chinese contestants, the competition is an opportunity for him to accrue experience.

"There is a gap between Chinese racers and European and American racers but it has been narrowing in the past few years. This competition has drawn top racers in the world whom we can communicate with and learn from," said Hu.

The Grand Prix organizers see a bright future for the sport in China.

"We have seen fast development in this sport in recent years, thanks to China's economic growth. There are more fans and more excellent racers now," said Liao Yifeng. "It is a promising sport in China."
