54 intl business authorities delve into BRI in Xiamen

Officials, business elites and experts from 13 countries attended a training class in Xiamen, Fujian province to learn about unimpeded commerce along the Belt and Road route, according to a launching ceremony held in the Chinese city on Sept 17.

The 54 attendees were from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Pakistan, Poland, the United States, and Micronesia.

During the six-day training event, they will get to know the latest information of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) including the new achievements, new difficulties and new measures related to unimpeded commerce.

Renowned Chinese experts from China's National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and top Chinese universities are expected to give lectures on the BRI in the new era, BRI and free trade zones and dilemmas faced by the multilateral trading system.

The trainees will also visit the core zone of the Maritime Silk Road in the Fujian and Xiamen free trade zones to witness the latest progress of unimpeded commerce along the Belt and Road route.

"My main target for this trip is to learn about the latest policies and information about the BRI," Dato' Lim Heng Ee, vice-chairman of the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce, said at the opening ceremony.

Lim added that in the past five years, the BRI has brought huge benefit to Malaysia and many local companies have reached cooperation deals for BRI projects with their Chinese counterparts.

Mirella Lechna from Poland came to get a further understanding of the BRI. "At the beginning, I thought BRI just depicts a transportation route and then I learnt that it advances the development of infrastructure and creates trade opportunities for countries along the route," Lechna said.

The training class was guided by China's National Development and Reform Commission, sponsored by the Chinese Language Education Foundation and organized by Huaqiao University.

It is the second time that Huaqiao University has organized the training class. The first one in 2017 was attended by 34 officials, enterprises' senior managers and experts from BRI countries and was well received.
