2018-06-20

A lush forest over the sea has formed on the Tongan Bay. Xiatanwei Wetland Park, the first and largest mangrove eco-wetland nature reserve in Xiamen, is under construction and making visible progress.

The first phase of the park was planted more than five years ago and has been consistently well maintained during this time.

At present, five mangrove ecosystem protected areas, the largest being Kandehlen, have been planted.

The mangroves are now growing well, and the fastest-growing sepals have already reached four to five meters, while the shorter candels can exceed one meter.

The planting of mangroves, which starts in May this year, is still the highlight of the second phase which is in progress.

As of June 2018, 50,400 square meters of mangroves have been planted, accounting for 14 percent of the total of the second phase. The whole project is going to be completed by the end of August.

The second phase of the Xiatanwei Wetland Ecological Park was launched in December 2016.

The project is composed of two parts: hydraulic and landscape.

The hydraulic includes the construction of mangrove planting areas and the establishment of cofferdams on the outside, dredging of watercourses, building new piers and wooden plank roads, and so on.

Up to now, 75% of the infrastructure has been completed. The whole project is planned to be finished by the end of this year, after which a five-year mangrove conservation period will follow.

The landscaping is currently in the stage of project approval, and it is expected to start by the end of 2018. Once all of the development work is done, the park will be opened to the public in 2020.
