Waste for food - Four new compost gardens for kitchen waste collection in Xiamen

2018-05-24

There is an exquisite three-dimensional vegetable garden near the Ruijing Park residential area. And what makes it so unique is that the vegetables grown in it can be exchanged for kitchen waste.

Food waste that would typically be thrown away can be poured into special compost tanks.

The waste will be mixed with a special compound and accumulated in a box to produce organic compost fertilizer.

The project leaders encourage the contribution of food waste by offering fresh produce in exchange, as well as soil and seeds from vegetable garden. A large box of kitchen waste can be exchanged for two or three kilograms of vegetables or about five pounds of organic nutrient soil.

Currently there are four kitchen waste recycling spots in Xiamen located in Shangli Community, Jiasheng Haoting, Xiada Xicun and Ruijing Park.

According to local reports, the vegetables that the residents received were grown using organic compost produced from kitchen waste.

In addition to the exchange system, residents can also purchase a variety of vegetables and fruits in the vegetable garden at a reasonable price.

At present, more than 30 kinds of vegetables and 15 kinds of fruits are grown and sold in the gardens.

In the future, the project plans to expand into larger urban areas with higher populations on the island.
