Xiamen folk customs about New Year

2018-02-16
The first day of Chinese New Year is known as Kaizheng in Xiamen, which means the beginning of spring. Traditionally, every household would make offerings to the gods and the ancestors to ask for the blessing in the new year. This is called kai caimen, meaning opening the door of fortune.

Then, firecrackers would be set off to welcome the new year and kids would pay New Years visits to the elder members of the family who would give the kids red envelopes stuffed with lucky moneyand positive wishes.

After that, the whole family would put on new cloths and have breakfast together before going to the temple to pray for safety, health, and happiness. In Xiamen, people would eat thin noodles, which is a symbol of health and longevity.

There is a taboo on New Years Day in Xiamen, too. Locals do not like to be waken up, because they may have a feeling of being pushed in the year.

2018 will be the Year of the Dog. The 2018 Chinese New Year begins on February 16. If you are in Xiamen, do not miss the fireworks show held in Huangcuo Beach along the Ring Road on February 16 at 8:00 pm.
