Germany opens Xiamen Park in Trier
On December 2nd, it was announced that Trier, an international sister city of Xiamen and the hometown of Karl Marx, had completed the construction of its Xiamen Park, a project jointly funded by Xiamen and Trier.
May, 2018 will mark the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth. The completion of the Xiamen Park has been included as an important element in the commemoration of this important pioneer. Additionally, other related activities will also be held next year.
Min Yiming, the representative of the Construction Party from Xiamen and the art director of Xiamen Urban Environment Design & Engineering Co., ltd, explained that Xiamen Park is ideally located next to the city’s cultural district, on the northwestern side of Trier University, covering an area of over 10,000 square meters with a total cost of 4 million yuan.
The construction startedin early September and Trier was responsible for the basic civil construction of the park, while Xiamen took care of the final construction and finish.
The main materials used in the construction of the park included natural rough stone, red Minnan bricks, porcelain pieces printed with the world cultural heritage of Kulangsu, were transported by sea to Antwerp, Belgium, and then taken to Trier overground.
“What impressed and touched us a lot is that the local residents were particularly concerned for us, as the local temperature during construction is often below zero degrees Celsius, and some residents even brought us warm tea,”Min added.
After the completion of Xiamen Park, Trier will set up a permanent sign, marking Xiamen's customs and the history of friendly exchanges between the two cities.
