Major landmarks in Xiamen switch off lights for Earth Hour

2017-03-28

At 8:30pm on the night of March 25th, Xiamen once again witnessed a eye catching spectacle of Earth Hour.

Without any central commands or orders and simply because of the love and care for mother earth, the lights were turned off in many high-rise buildings. Power distribution rooms, advertising light boxes, elevators and other equipment were turned off, as well as some of the fluorescent and canister lights along Xiamen’s BRT lines. Moreover, Gulangyu’s lights dimmed and the original ambient lighting around Yuandang Lake switched to a simple system.

Many other work units, enterprises and members of the public also spontaneously responded to Earth Hour, including many hotels, shopping malls and other service industries.

Earth Hour is an proposal from the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature or World Wildlife Fund), which appeals to individuals, communities, businesses and governments to turn off lights at 20:30 on the last Saturday of March, to demonstrate public support for action on climate change.

So far, Earth Hour has come to the 9th year. All in all, saving an hour’s electrical consumption is not a major end in itself. More importantly, however, is the way in which it can make the concepts of low-carbon, energy-saving and emissions reduction penetrate into the general public’s life. Thus, Earth Day’s goal is the protection of the environment, not just for one hour every year, but rather throughout all the little affairs and actions of daily life.
