Xiamen makes every efforts for BRICS Summit

2017-02-15

The BRICS committee announced the subject and symbol of the summit at the beginning of the Chinese New Year. The summit will focus on deepening the relationship and creating a brighter future. The summit’s symbol shows a bulging sail and a spinning earth, what’s more, it features five different colours which represents the BRICS. This symbol indicates the summit’s subject and, at the same time, captures the marine culture of the host city Xiamen.

The summit  will be hosted to the highest-ever standard in Xiamen this September. Xiamen has always been known as the “garden on the sea” and enjoys a reputation for its internationalisation. After the summit, the city is expected to open to the world on a broader scale still.

Xiamen has been a major exporter of Chinese tea since the 16th century. British society called it cha at first, after it was shipped out from Xiamen. Tea then become its new name following the Xiamen dialect’s name for it, according to the Xiamen literature and history scholar YiWan Peng, honorary chairman of southern Fujian cultural research seminar. “Xiamen witnessed the emergent between East-West culture and cultural diversity in the international society.”

Nowadays, Xiamen has established itself as a pivotal city in the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. The Silk Road Economic Belt links Eurasia from the Far East (Xiamen included) to Lodz (Poland) in Central Europe, thus connecting the Maritime and Continental Silk Roads. Last year, Xiamen received 3,578,100 inbound tourists.

For Xiamen, the BRICS Summit is not only a test of local facilities, city management and cultural development, but also of the abilities and working style of cadres of all levels.

“The BRICS Summit provides Xiamen with a very rare opportunity for its development. It is a vital chance for Xiamen to speed up its modernisation in time for this strategic pivotal moment, to improve the level of internationalism, city management and international image of the city.” Xiamen Municipal Party Committee emphasised that it is of vital importance to take the role of host seriously.

The preparations for the BRICS Summit are a top priority for Xiamen; the sense of urgency and significance making it spare no efforts in making the summit a success.

At the moment Xiamen is accelerating the reconstruction work following last year’s typhoon. The work is following a practical problem-solving approach that stresses the key objectives: improving the city’s environment and management, improving public service and  public livelihood protection. In addition, Xiamen is getting the public involved in these processes and making every effort to be a success host of the BRICS Summit.

Xiamen will seize this great opportunity to attract business, promote its investment environment, business cooperation and cultural communication with BRICS countries and with cities that lie along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.
