To celebrate this year's Dragon Boat Festival, the Guanren sub-district Yundang Community hosted a zongi-making event on Yundang Lake last week.

On June 4th, a number of both Chinese and foreign families were invited to join this cultural activity. After a brief introduction to the traditional festival, there was a demonstration by a chef from Marco Polo Hotel on how to make zongzi.

Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings which are wrapped in bamboo, reed, or other large flat leaves then either steamed or boiled. In the Western world, they are also known as rice dumplings, or sticky rice dumplings.

Zongzi are popular during the Dragon Boat Festival, which is best known in modern China as the festival commemorating the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan

Linsey, a mom from America, claimed third prize in the zongzi-making contest, while two Chinese families won the two top prizes.
